India - the filthy side

I have been to Varanasi and Puri Jagannath temple. I have seen and perhaps lived in a somewhat similar untidy situation (even have actually swam in the Ganges water). But these pictures surprisingly raise a lot of questions on why it cannot  be a better place? I do not question the religious beliefs but shouldn't it be tangential to tidiness?

    Interesting article but very strong one! Sad part is improvement might take longer given the current state..
